Woman arrested as customs seize HK$26m of cocaine in sneakers
A 44-year-old woman was arrested by customs after officers seized 31 kg of suspected cocaine valued at about HK$26 million in sports shoes arriving from Malaysia last month.
According to customs, officers inspected a consolidated container arriving from Malaysia at the Kwai Chung Customhouse on November 25. Officers later found the suspected cocaine, weighing 31 kg in total, concealed in a batch of sports shoes inside one of the 11 consignments in the container, declared as carrying personal effect.
After a follow-up investigation and a controlled delivery operation, officers arrested a 44-year-old local woman suspected to be connected with the case in a Kwai Chung industrial building on November 30.
Customs explained that officers raised suspicions as the logistic company responsible for the involved shipment was established recently and Malaysia has been a popular drugs transit port in Asia.
Investigation is ongoing and the arrested woman has been released on bail pending further investigations.
Customs believed that criminals are stockpiling the drugs to supply local market during the long holidays in New Year, and warned that more arrests may be made.
Customs also warned that trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offense and the maximum penalty upon conviction carries a HK$5 million fine and life imprisonment.
