Why are Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific pilots so unhappy?
Union chief says morale is low, with recent slow plane taxiing incident at airport stemming from pilot frustration.
The grievances of pilots with Hong Kong flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways that led to slow plane taxiing incidents at the airport include extensive pay cuts and family lives being upended because of slashed benefits, according to an aircrew union and captain’s wife.
Paul Weatherilt, chairman of the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association, on Monday claimed pilots were also unhappy over poor communication with the company and a revised by-hour pay system based on flight times.
Weatherilt revealed he had heard of instances where senior pilots had to move homes and switch schools for their children as housing, education and medical benefits shrank.
