Votes in Chief Executive election will be counted manually
The votes in next year's Chief Executive election will be counted by hand, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau said.
The bureau explained the arrangements for next March's CE election in a Legislative Council panel meeting on Monday.
The decision to count votes manually is made due to the relatively small number of voters in the CE election – 1,488 – and the vote-count delay in the Election Committee election earlier.
Hong Kong's first Election Committee after Beijing's electoral overhaul hit a major snag in September as vote counting took 14 hours for just 4,380 ballots.
The CE election is scheduled for March 27 next year at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.
A candidate will be elected as long as they receive more than 750 valid votes. Otherwise, the Returning Officer will arrange a second round of nomination and voting.
