The 28-year-old bus driver was arrested for dangerous driving.
The fatal incident occurred at 9.18am today by the roundabout near Yu Tung Road in Tung Chung.
According to live sources, a truck weighing 5.5 tonnes belonging to a cleaning company was parked on Yu Tung Road behind the van under the same company. The truck driver and several janitors left the vehicles and was cleaning the bushes by the side.
That was when the E36A bus arrived but the bus captain suspectedly didn't apply the brakes in time, crashing into the truck and pushing the truck forward into the van before it.
The 64-year-old male driver and a janitor were trapped underneath the truck, while another janitor was sent flying meters away after collision.
The truck driver was later pronounced dead as paramedics rushed to the rescue. The other two janitors sustained severe injuries and were sent to hospital, so were some of the bus passengers who felt unwell.
According to police, five were sent to North Lantau Hospital and two to Princess Margaret Hospital.
Aound 1.30pm, the 52-year-old van driver surnamed Lai was certified dead at Princess Margaret Hospital. It was understood that he was also a foreman.
It was understood that the cleaning company was a contractor of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department.
The front of the bus was damaged with cracks on the windscreen, and the truck mounted on the side by the left after the crash. The van, on the other hand, turned to the opposite direction after being hit by the truck in the rear end.
A spokesperson for Long Win Bus Co Ltd said the company is saddened by the fatal incident and extends condolences to the deceased driver and his family.
The bus company added it has sent staffers to the scene and the hospitals to provide assistance and to aid police investigations.
