(Video) HK's third airport runway to launch in 2022
The pavement of Hong Kong's third runway has been completed, and the runway will launch in second half of 2022, the Airport Authority announced.
With HK$141.5 million invested in the project, construction of the runway at Hong Kong International Airport began in August 2016. The new runway is 3,800 meters long and 60 meters wide.
Pavement works for the runway were completed this June. The pavement is made up up of five layers of materials that amount to a thickness of over a meter.
Constructed in accordance with international standards, the pavement can withstand the wear and tear brought by a full range of aircraft including the world's largest passenger plane.
The airfield ground lighting works are now being installed. Over 14,000 airfield ground lighting will be added on the runway and associated taxiways.
The third runway and the associated taxiway system are expected to be commissioned in mid-2022.
The existing north runway will then be closed for two years for reconfiguration into a new center runway. All three runways will be up and running in 2024.
A new T2 Concourse is being constructed. It will occupy around 283,000 square meters and offer about 63 parking stands.
As for the existing Terminal 2, it was closed for expansion at the end of 2019.
The expanded terminal will provide full-fledged passengers services, including arrivals and departures facilities. Passengers can proceed to the new T2 Concourse via a new Automated People Mover and to SKYCITY via a footbridge.
The T2 Concourse and the entire three-runway system project will be complete in 2024.
