Unis see jump in law, medicine rankings

Local universities have climbed up on a global rankings list by subjects by Times Higher Education, with the medical school of the University of Hong Kong attaining a historic 13th place in the ranking, up from 20th last year.
HKU's law school also jumped up 12 places from 36th to 24th.

The Chinese University's medical school also saw its ranking climb eight spots to 44th from 52nd, while its law school will be toasting its huge leap forward from 101-125th to 47th.

City University's law faculty saw a modest five-place improvement from 56th to 51st.

In education, HKU ranked fifth this, one place up, while Chinese University went up from 21st to 17th.

In social sciences, Chinese University, Polytechnic University and CityU moved up to 60th, 68th and 100th, while HKU was down four places from 33rd to 37th.

In business and economics, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology climbed from 33rd to 29th, while CityU also went up from 94th to 52nd, while PolyU and CUHK's rankings saw slight drops to 27th and 60th. HKU's ranking stayed at 34th.

Lau Chak-sing, the dean of medicine at HKU, thanked all staff after learning of the historic high ranking at a time when the school is celebrating its 135th anniversary.

"This is one of the most welcome gifts on our 135th anniversary. Notwithstanding the challenges over the past year, we have worked diligently and persistently as a great team," Lau said.

'While toasting our new laurel, we must not lose sight of what has brought us here and now," he said.

"Looking forward, we shall continue to put people at the center of everything we do and be humble. We shall carry on our mission of training health-care workers to the highest caliber and professionalism, and be always ready to serve and nurture," Lau said.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 by subject is compiled from data taken from THE World University Rankings 2023 with a record 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions included in the rankings this year.

"The THE World University Rankings by Subject are based on the same 13 rigorous and balanced performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings - giving rich data insights into a university's teaching, research, interactions with industry and its international competitiveness - but for each of the 11 separate subject areas, the methodology has been carefully recalibrated with different weightings to reflect the different characteristics of the subject area," said Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer of Times Higher Education.
