Unemployment rate drops to 3pc between Feb and Apr, continuing successive 12-month decline
Hong Kong's latest unemployment rate continued its drop to 3 percent between February and April, with about 110,000 citizens still hunting for jobs.
The Census and Statistics Department's data released on Thursday showed the latest rate marked a 0.1 decrease compared with the one recorded between this January and March.
Total employment increased by around 1,800 to 3,655,900, and the labor force also increased by about 1,100 to 3,770,300.
"The labor market continued to improve as domestic economic activities revived further, and visitor arrivals rebounded strongly," said Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han.
The Department pointed out that the movement in the unemployment rate recorded from February to April differed among the sectors compared to the recorded data from January to March.
During the February to April period, the decoration, repair, and maintenance of buildings sector; the transportation sector; and warehousing and support activities for transportation saw the most notable decrease in unemployment rates.
However, the underemployment rate remained stagnant at 1.2 percent, with the number of underemployed people decreasing only marginally by around 2,200 to 44,500.
Underemployment is a measure of the total number of people in an economy who are unwillingly working in low-skill and low-paying jobs or only part-time because they cannot get full-time jobs that use their skills.
