Although state media reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a celebration for the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover, it remains doubtful whether Xi will physically be in the city with two incoming top officials infected with Covid.
Xinhua News reported on Saturday morning that “President Xi Jinping will attend a meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland.
“Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, will also attend the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term government of the HKSAR,” the report continued without saying if Xi will physically be in Hong Kong.
On June 25, 2017, the Xinhua report wrote “Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in Hong Kong from June 29 to July 1...
“Xi … will also be present” at the inauguration for the cabinet of outgoing leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor back then, according to the old report.
Both Lam and Chief Executive-elect john Lee Ka-chiu published a statement on Saturday morning after the news broke out and extended their gratitude for the “President's attendance.”
Whether Xi will attend the celebration and inauguration ceremony in-person remains doubtful as two incoming top government officials are among the latest
Covid-19 infections the city logged.
They are incoming Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki and incumbent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai. Their infections were announced on Thursday.
The government also confirmed on Friday that Director of Marine Carol Yuyen Siu-wai is now undergoing quarantine after one of her friends is infected with the
coronavirus.
