Health authorities will resume the treatment facility at AsiaWorld Expo starting next week for the mounting number of elderly patients as Hong Kong added 6,445 Covid cases on Friday.
Among the new cases, 6,260 were locally transmitted, including 2,167 confirmed via PCR tests and 4,093 verified positive RAT test results.
The Centre for Health Protection's principal medical and health officer Albert Au Ka-wing also logged 185 imported cases – 73 identified at the airport, 36 in quarantine hotels, and 76 in community testing centers.
Ten elderly homes were hit by
Covid, involving 26 residents and seven workers; three care centers for the disabled also saw three residents infected with the
coronavirus. A total of 202 people were listed as close contacts and ordered to undergo quarantine.
Au noted the recent outbreaks at elderly homes were probably caused by infected workers and appealed to them to take a RAT test every day before heading to work.
Au added some deceased patients saw their condition worsen as they turned to the doctors late. He urged infected citizens to visit clinics that are prescribing oral
Covid drugs as soon as possible to minimize the bed occupancy rate of public hospitals.
He also said authorities will resume the isolation beds at AsiaWorld Expo next week, which will be used to mainly treat elderly patients.
Hospital Authority's chief manager for quality and standards Lau Ka-hin reported eight related deaths, including seven men and a woman aged between 61 and 93. These deceased patients pushed the death tally of the fifth wave to 9,384.
Lau continued that seven of them had yet to complete vaccination, including four who didn't receive a single
Covid jab.
One of the deceased patients was a 73-year-old man who had been triple-jabbed. He didn't suffer from any chronic disease and tested positive on July 31 but didn't seek medical attention.
He headed to the emergency room of the Eastern Hospital after he tripped over at home on August 13. After being admitted to the hospital, his condition deteriorated, and he developed other symptoms, including loss of appetite and physical strength.
He tested negative after being admitted to the hospital, and authorities believed that his death was unrelated to
Covid.
Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 1,898
Covid patients. Among them, 36 patients are in critical condition, 25 in serious condition, and 10 in hospital intensive care units. In the past 24 hours, 237 patients have recovered from
Covid, and 206 of them have been discharged.
