Two fraudsters arrested in ‘guess-who-I-am’ scam involving HK$330,000
Two men were arrested for attempting to con two elderly women twice after succeeding in a previous scam.
The police were alerted to two cases of 'guess-who-I-am' mobile scams by two women, aged 79 and 92, stating they received a phone call from their son and grandson, respectively, that they needed bail money after being arrested.
They were previously asked to bring HK$80,000 and HK$250,000 to their friends in a specific location. Both of them called the police after being scammed.
They received a call from the fraudsters again last week, using the same excuse to make them hand over their money.
The Kwun Tong police officers were notified and laid an ambush, arresting two 21-year-old men. The duo are under police custody on suspicion of "obtaining property by deception". Officers also seized their mobile phones.
The case has been handed over to the Kwun Tong police district, and officers have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests.
