Two arrested for using fake cash to order food delivery
Police announced on Wednesday the arrest of two men who were suspected of using false cash and seized 37 counterfeit banknotes in Kwun Tong.
The two arrestees, aged 34 and 41 respectively, were alleged to be engaging in a series of crimes for passing fake bills in the districts of Tseung Kwan O, Tsing Yi, and Kwun Tong in October.
According to the police, a delivery man reported on Monday afternoon claiming to have received a bogus banknote valued at HK$500 from a customer in Kwun Tong, after which a staff member in a convenience shop in Wong Tai Sin told the police to receive three counterfeit HK$500 bills.
After the preliminary investigation of the footage from the video surveillance at the scene, officers launched a raid to arrest two men in Kwun Tong, seizing a total of 37 counterfeit bills, including 35 of HK$500 and two of HK$100.
Officers also detected a printer that was believed to have been used for producing the fake cash during the operation.
It is also found by the police that two arrestees have used the fake banknote to purchase food and second-hand goods on local online platforms.
They are now in custody and under investigation by the police’s Commercial Crime Bureau.
According to Hong Kong laws, anyone who produces or uses counterfeit notes or coins knowingly can be punished with imprisonment for 14 years.
