Tung Chung to see first public housing block built with MIC method concrete
The first public housing block that adopts the modular integrated construction (MIC) technology with concrete will set foot in Tung Chung, providing some 240 flats.
It is one of the five domestic blocks of the Tung Chung Area 99 project. The 12-story Block 5 will be constructed with concrete in the MIC method, marking the city’s first of its kind.
The Housing Authority said the land there is flat and can give more room and better convenience for workers to transport, store and install the modules at the site using the MIC method.
Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho Wing-yin said should the MIC method succeed for the construction of Block 5, it will be expanded to the construction of other public housing projects.
She also referred to the policy address that at least half of the public housing projects in the second half of the next ten years will be built using the MIC method.
The MIC method will be a crucial direction for property development in the future, Ho added, as she spoke of the labor shortage and aging problem in the industry.
Ho also mentioned that the Married Quarters for the Fire Services Department at Pak Shing Kok was constructed using the MIC method. The project saw labor decrease by 50 percent, construction waste by 53 percent, electric tariff by 68 percent, and water use by 66 percent.
The housing chief noted that the MIC method also fits the low-carbon emission construction goal.
The site of the Area 99 project has a floor area of about 3.26 hectares, and the five blocks there are expected to house about 14,800 citizens. The construction began last year and is expected to complete in 2025.
