Tropical Storm Ma-on to affect HK, bringing squally thunderstorms
The tropical depression over the seas east of Luzon has intensified into a tropical storm and was named Ma-on on Monday, it is expected to enter the northeastern part of the South China Sea tomorrow night, edging closer to the coast of Guangdong and intensifying gradually on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Hong Kong Observatory noted that the landfall position and intensity of the tropical cyclone still remain uncertain, but it is expected to bring heavy squally showers and thunderstorms over the region.
The weather will be windy and seas will be rough with swells, the observatory added.
At noon, Ma-on was centered about 380 kilometers east of Baguio. It is forecast to move northwest at about 10 kilometers per hour in the general direction towards the Luzon Strait and the northern part of Luzon.
Today’s weather will be mainly fine with isolated showers, along with temperatures ranging between 28 and 33 degrees Celsius.
Windy weather with showers and squally thunderstorms is expected starting Thursday.
Meanwhile, the “very hot weather” warning is currently in force, cautioning residents to be aware of the risk of heatstroke.
The warning is issued when temperatures are expected to reach at least 33 degrees.
Members of the public were urged to stay hydrated, particularly for those who have to spend time outdoors.
“To prevent heat stroke, avoid prolonged activities outdoors…If engaged in outdoor work or activities, wear a wide-brimmed hat and light-colored, loose-fitting clothes. Stay in shaded areas as much as possible,
“Drink plenty of water, and avoid beverages containing caffeine or alcohol,” a government spokesman added.
