Tropical cyclone Rai to be within 800km of Hong Kong by Monday
Tropical cyclone Rai, which is wrecking havoc in the Philippines, is forecast to enter the 800-kilometer radius of Hong Kong on Monday as a severe tropical storm.
On that day, the cyclone would come with a maximum sustained speed of 105km per hour, according to the Hong Kong observatory.
It is expected to weaken to a tropical storm when it comes closer, about 400km from Hong Kong, on Tuesday.
Rai rapidly intensified before making landfall in the southern Philippines on Thursday, forcing mass evacuations and flight cancellations as floodwaters reached chest-high in low-lying communities.
The 15th typhoon to enter Philippine territory this year hit the holiday island of Siargao in the southern province of Surigao del Norte, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 195 km per hour, the Philippine weather bureau said. Close to 100,000 people have fled their homes.
Hong Kong observatory forecasts that Rai will move across the Philippines and enter the southern part of the South China Sea in the next couple of days. It will turn to a northerly track and weaken gradually on Sunday, but its subsequent movement and intensity remain uncertain.
The cloud bands associated with Rai will bring rainy weather to the northern part of the South China Sea early to midweek next week.
Temperatures will drop to a minimum of 14 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday and dip to 12 degrees in Sheung Shui, Tai Po, and Sha Tin. It will be nine degrees in Ta Kwu Ling.
