Hong Kong Justice Chief Says Attempts to Withdraw from Organ Donation System are Not Yet Illegal
The Hong Kong justice chief, Paul Lam Ting-kwok, stated that it is too soon to determine whether attempts to withdraw from an organ donation registration system are illegal.
The Chief Executive, John Lee Ka-chiu, condemned the act of people trying to discourage others from organ donation, and ordered police to investigate.
The Health Bureau revealed an "abnormally high" number of withdrawals of prospective organ donors over the past five months, and over half of them had never registered to become donors.
The justice chief said authorities are currently looking into the case, and it is too soon to determine whether such actions were inappropriate or could violate any laws.
The SAR government is currently engaging in talks with mainland authorities on a cross-border transplant mechanism.
The justice chief also declined to give answers to hypothetical questions about citizens holding candles at Victoria Park to commemorate victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, stating that citizens should abide by the law in conducting all kinds of activities, with citizens banned from participating in seditious activities under the city's national security law.
