Tin Shui Wai teen dies playing Nintendo sports video game
An 18-year-old teenager who was playing “Ring Fit Adventure,” a Nintendo Switch sports video game at his home in Tin Shui Wai collapsed and died on Friday.
The tragedy that occurred at Hung Lok House in Hung Fuk Estate was reported by the mother of the teenager surnamed Lee at 2.32pm this afternoon.
Police and paramedics responded to the Tin Shui Wai home only to declare the teenager dead at the scene.
It was understood that Lee was a university student without any illness record and was playing the video game, which involved physical activities, alone in the morning. It wasn't until two to three hours later that the mother found out as she returned home and called the police.
Police found Lee's left leg tied with the sensor-controller of the fitness ring and a yoga mat lying on the ground. Lee sustained injuries to his head with both his nose and ears bleeding.
After preliminary investigation, officers suspected that Lee fell during game play and believed there was no suspicious action involved in his death.
The actual cause of death for Lee has yet to be confirmed, awaiting an autopsy.
According to the official website of Nintendo Switch, “Ring Fit Adventure” is a video game package that comes with a fitness ring and a leg strap.
The two controllers can be separated from the Switch console and then attached to the ring and leg strap respectively to make health measurements when players defeat enemies in game with workout moves.
