Three arrests over phone scams involving HK$340,000
The police arrested three men for allegedly cheating victims of HK$340,000 in 5 cases of phone scams.
The trio, aged between 17 to 27, were arrested in Ta Kwu Ling and Tuen Mun for their involvement in 'guess who I am' and government official impersonation telephone scams.
One of the arrestees impersonated a family member of an 84-year-old elderly and claimed that he had violated a mainland law and needed HK$100,000 for bail money.
After the perpetrator received the first payment, he tried to ask for another HK$190,000 the next day. The victim refused as he contacted his son and filed a police report regarding the scam.
One of the arrested is a university student who scammed a 49-year-old woman claiming that her phone number in the mainland had been used for money laundering and requested her to hand over a large sum of bail money.
