Themed Starbucks selling pineapple bun to close next month
The Hong Kong delicacies of pineapple bun and egg tarts will disappear from Starbucks' menu as its themed shop on Duddell Street in Central closes next month.
The coffee shop has announced that the outlet adopting the “bing sutt” theme will close soon.
"Bing sutt", a simple establishment which offers light meals and drinks, was popular in the 50s and 60s. It is seen as the predecessor of "cha chaan tengs", or Hong Kong style cafes which offer a mix of Chinese and western dishes.
The Duddell Street outlet offers classic Hong Kong-style food, including pineapple bun with butter, egg tart and red bean pudding a.k.a. “put chai ko.”
Netizens found the imminent closure to be a pity, and suggested Starbucks to set up similar themed stores in other areas in the future.
Starbucks Hong Kong said that the Duddell Street outlet launched in 2009. Its design took reference from "bing sutt" in the 1950s and 1970s, and made use of some modern art.
"The company is proud to have operated this unique store. However, after careful consideration of various operational factors, it will cease operations in mid-October," Starbucks Hong Kong said.
A company spokesman said Starbucks will continue to serve customers at its Lan Kwai Fong store in Central and is looking forward to bringing more distinctively designed stores to the customers in the future.
