The Hong Kong Soccer Sevens will be back for the first time in four years, with six-time winners Aston Villa and defending back-to-back champions Newcastle United headlining the return.
The 21st edition of the three-day tournament, which was postponed because of the
coronavirus pandemic, will run from this Friday (May 26) to Sunday and will feature a total of 26 teams, with 16 of them participating in the Main Event and ten teams for the Masters Tournament at Hong Kong Football Club.
Mark Harrison, the academy manager from Aston Villa, was delighted to return to the event and looked forward to fighting for their seventh title.
English clubs Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham, Scottish club Rangers, a Hong Kong Football Association representative squad, and domestic champions Kitchee and WoFoo Tai Po are among the 16 teams that will play in the Main Event.
In the Masters Tournament, the Citi All Stars will take on defending champions Wallsend Boys Club in a 10-team event that will also feature representatives from the Portuguese Football Association and the Professional Footballers' Association.
Neil Jensen, the HKFC chairman, said the club was "absolutely thrilled" to bring the Soccer Sevens back to the city and looked forward to seeing the young talent in the global game back on the pitch in Hong Kong after a challenging three years.
Chris Long, Citi Hong Kong's chief administration officer, said they were honored to support the Soccer Sevens competition and thanked the HKFC for bringing the tournament back.
