Tensions increase as cops surrounded and outnumbered in Sham Shui Po
Several police officers were spotted being surrounded by a significant number of South Asians in Sham Shui Po at night, according to videos circulating online. The South Asians, in two groups, were also heard cursing at each other in Cantonese, increasing tensions that a fight would break out at anytime.
Sources said that the South Asians left a mosque near Apliu Street and started an argument over religious ritual issues. The noises disturbed the neighbors and triggered them to file reports to police.
In one of the videos, up to seven police vehicles could be counted at the scene. Yet, the South Asians cursed at the officers as well, and pushed and pulled each other in front of police.
Some became emotional and started yelling as officers escorted a man in a white top onboard a police vehicle.
Replying to media enquiries, police said the incident occurred at an intersection between Apliu Street and Shek Kip Mei Street around 11pm on Monday (Mar 27).
Officers were mobilized to the scene after police received noise complaints in the area, and found about 20 South Asians gathered there. They didn't fight and left the scene on their own later.
