Tech minister says govt optimizing national anthem web search results
The government is now optimizing the search results for the Chinese national anthem on its web pages from the technical perspective, said Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry Sun Dong, after Google refused authorities' request to remove the wrong protest song from the search results.
Replying to questions raised by lawmaker Eunice Yung Hoi-yan, Sun said on Wednesday that the government and Google “agreed to maintain communication continuously and identify a proper way to resolve the problem.”
The agreement came as Sun said he recently had a meeting with the seniors of Google Asia Pacific.
Sun also noted that the government is closely monitoring the search results of the regional flag and regional emblem on the internet but added that the information online is ever-changing and search results for the same word or phrase could vary from time to time.
“We recommend that the public should refer to the government website in order to obtain the accurate information,” he said.
“The official recording of the National Anthem is available for download at the website of the Protocol Division Government Secretariat.”
Sun also said the government will follow up on whether there has been any violation of the National Anthem Ordinance or any other Hong Kong laws by any person.
“We will, based on the results of the investigation, take appropriate follow-up action.”
He continued that public broadcaster RTHK is producing a new short video, “The Story of the National Anthem,” to introduce the origin of the national anthem and explain the background and historical significance of the “March of the Volunteers.”
The video will be broadcast on RTHK's TV channel this month (Jan) and uploaded to various online platforms of RTHK and a dedicated web page.
