China's foreign ministry will continue to support, guide and assist Hong Kong in its diplomatic work, "resolutely safeguard the sovereignty, security and development interests of the state, and promote the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong," a state official said yesterday.
That came as Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu met Foreign Minister Qin Gang to exchange views on diplomatic work related to Hong Kong.
Lee said he appreciated the ministry's long-standing support for the SAR with regard to the one country, two systems principle, especially in "resisting external interference in Hong Kong's affairs."
He hoped to continue receiving guidance and support from the ministry in Hong Kong's foreign-related affairs.
In an interview with China Central Television, he said the SAR should contribute to the country given the advantages bestowed by one country, two systems.
"I also hope my team will visit Beijing and other cities more often now that quarantine-free travel has resumed, to learn about the country's overall development."
Lee posted photos on his
Facebook page showing he and other officials in his delegation dining at a backstreet restaurant on "old Beijing" food of tofu and pancakes.
Secretary for Innovation and Technology Sun Dong said national support was essential to develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub.
"After signing the arrangement - focusing on speeding up Hong Kong's effort to become an international innovation technology center - with the Ministry of Science and Technology [on Wednesday], all provinces and cities will accelerate their cooperation with Hong Kong," Sun said.
He also said Hong Kong should be integrated into the country's technological development, including participation in the country's large-scale projects.
Lee and Sun were speaking as Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau led a delegation to the National Health Commission and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Lo thanked the commission's leaders for its medical supplies, experts and advice to help the SAR in fighting the pandemic at the height of the fifth wave last year.
He briefed the traditional Chinese medicine officials on the construction of the Chinese medicine hospital and the government Chinese medicines testing institute, which are expected to be commissioned in phases starting from 2025.
