Tai Kok Tsui couple arrested over death of three-month-old baby
A young couple in Tai Kok Tsui was on Saturday arrested for murder over the death of a three-month-old baby boy who sustained bruises and burn wounds all over his body.
The case was reported to police by the 35-year-old husband surnamed Yip at 1.54am on early Saturday morning that the boy had passed out in a flat at Peony House West Block on Pok Man Street in Tai Kok Tsui.
The baby was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital by paramedics, but in vain; he was pronounced dead at 3.08am.
Yip, a logistic worker, and his 24-year-old jobless wife named Lam were both arrested for murder. A preliminary investigation found that the baby’s birth mother was a friend of Lam, and she entrusted her baby to the couple in late July because she faced financial issues.
The couple has been raising another nine-month-old baby boy, and they have been living at the Tai Kok Tsui home for about two years.
Forensic revealed that the three-month-old sustained four 1cm-long bruises to the right side of his forehead. Burns ranging from 1cm to 8cm in length were also found on the baby’s left forearm, left calf, right thigh, and the back of his right leg.
Forensics continued that the wounds were suspicious, but the actual cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
The Mong Kok district crime squad now handles the case, and officers are currently investigating the mental state of the arrestees and if the case involves child abuse and neglect towards a young child.
