Ta Kwu Ling couple arrested after letting their dog die of thirst
A couple in Ta Kwu Ling were on Monday arrested for cruelty to animals after chaining up their dog, depriving it of water and leaving it to die of thirst in squalid conditions.
The man surnamed Tse, 64, and his wife surnamed Yeung, 54, have been released on bail and the two must report to police in mid-May.
The dog’s body is now kept by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, awaiting the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department to retrieve for a further autopsy.
The case was reported by the couple's neighbor on Monday, who was troubled by an unpleasant odor emanating from the couple's home in Ha Shan Kai Wat village in Ta Kwu Ling, New Territories.
Police were called to the scene and on arrival discovered the animal, approximately three to four years old, dead from apparent neglect and abuse by its owners.
During the investigation, officers found that the dog was chained up inside a cage and lying on planks of wood. Two bowls were placed before the dog but there was no food and water. The scene was littered with garbage in a state of poor hygiene.
Police then arrested the couple the same day for cruelty to animals. The duo has been released on bail and the case is now handled by the border district crime squad.
Officers warned that cruelty to animals is a serious offense and the maximum penalty upon conviction carries a HK$200,000 fine and three-year imprisonment.
They also called on citizens to report to police to seek help if they encounter any animal cruelty incident.
