Suspect who escaped custody over court switcheroo faces two additional charges
A suspected drug trafficker who escaped custody after switching wristbands with another suspect is now facing two additional charges as he appeared in the West Kowloon Court on Saturday.
The 37-year-old suspect Chan was arrested in Yau Ma Tei Thursday night (Apr 14) after switching wristbands with a 24-year-old suspect Lam from a separate domestic violence case.
The two first met each other while they were held in the same cell in the court house on Monday (Apr 10), and Chan allegedly promised to pay Lam HK$20,000 after his successful escape.
Appearing in court again today, Chan was charged with escaping legal custody and misleading a police officer.
He was earlier charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs and obstructing police over the previous drug trafficking case.
As requested by the prosecution, Chan’s case was adjourned to May 25, pending further police investigation.
Chan didn’t apply for bail and will remain in the custody of the Correctional Services Department.
