Suspect on the run after robbing newspaper stall to 'buy milk powder for hungry son'
A stall owner in To Kwa Wan was robbed by a sole assailant wielding a knife, saying he needed HK$1000 to buy milk powder for his son.
The female owner of the newspaper stall, surnamed Yau, was robbed on Sunday (Mar 5). The video footage showed the perpetrator wearing a mask and a cap while holding a white bag when approaching the newspaper stall, after which he revealed the knife to scare and rob Yau.
The two struggled until the robber successfully took the money and fled. Yau suffered a cut on her hand. Police later arrived to check the security camera and are currently tracking the robber.
She recounted the incident today and stated that the robber covered her mouth and used the knife to threaten her by saying he needed HK$1000 to feed his son.
After the struggle, she hurriedly handed a stack of cash to the robber and did not even count the money out of fear.
She stated that the robber spoke Cantonese and was a local. The police told her the suspect was a frequent perpetrator who used the same excuse of needing to feed his son to rob other stores in Yau Ma Tei District.
