Supermoon, the largest of the year to glow for 7 hours
A supermoon will be waiting for citizens tonight - and it is the largest full moon of the year.
Chan Chun-lam, an assistant curator at the Hong Kong Space Museum, explains that the supermoon will be a whopping 14 percent larger than when it is at apogee.
As the Observatory predicts the weather to be very sunny today, Chan remarks that the public should expect to see a “beautiful” supermoon.
He pointed out that the moon will be closest to Earth at 5.06pm but will not appear in Hong Kong until 7pm -- the supermoon will be largest at 2.38 am on Thursday.
Chan said that the best viewing time for the public is between 7.30pm and 8pm when the moon is at its lowest point. With a slight orange color, the moon will not be too bright and its size will be further magnified with “buildings, mountains, and ocean as backdrop”.
Next year’s largest supermoon will appear during August, and will be even closer to the Earth than tonight’s one.
Chan also brought up the lunar eclipse that will be taking place on November 8, saying that it will be a “major astronomical event, and even the color of the moon will be different then.”
