Student sent to detention center after found guilty of possessing explosive
“Be good” and “think of your mother”, a district court judge told a 20-year-old student who was found guilty of possessing explosive, before sending him to a detention center on Friday.
Lai Man-kwong, a secondary six student of Caritas Ma On Shan Secondary School was found guilty of possessing explosive, after he was reported bringing to school an explosive called triacetone triperoxide (TATP), which he described as an “interesting chemical”, on November 27, 2019.
Before handing down the sentence, judge Anthony Kwok Kai-on pointed out that the court didn't accept defense's explanation that Lai brought the chemical to school for self-study or experiments.
Yet the explosive was not found at the scene of a riot or an unlawful assembly, and there was no evidence to prove that the explosive will be used to disrupt public order, Kwok said.
Lai's hot headed youth and inexperience may have made him to bring the chemical to school, thinking it was fun to do so, he added .
Before dismissing the court, Kwok reminded Lai to behave in the detention center, telling him to “be good” and to “think of your mother”, and not to commit similar offense foolishly in the future.
