Starry starry night on Wed with Geminid meteor shower
The Geminid meteor shower will befall Hong Kong on Wednesday night in the season when lights sparkle on Christmas trees, and its peak will occur at 9 pm.
During the peak, the Zenithal Hourly Rate - the hourly number of meteors observable in an extremely dark and wide sky - of the meteor shower can reach 150.
As observing conditions are inevitably affected by the position of the radiant of the meteor shower and moonlight, the best time for observation is estimated to be from 10 pm to 11 pm on Wednesday.
Observers in remote areas might see 10-20 meteors during that time, but only less than five meteors can be visible in the city outskirts and nearby countryside.
The Geminids are one of the brightest meteor showers this year, said the Hong Kong Space Museum. Slow in speed and rich and stable in number make the shower spectacular for visual observation.
The Space Museum will live stream the meteor shower from 9 pm to 11 pm on Wednesday through its YouTube channel.
