Star Ferry fares to rise after ExCo approves increase application
Ferry fares from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central and Wan Chai will be increased to HK$5 as the Executive Council has approved the fare hike application submitted by Star Ferry last year. The new fares will be implemented on April 3.
After the adjustments, the fares of the two ferry routes will increase by HK$1 to $2.3 per trip. The adult weekday fares will be HK$5, while weekend/public holiday fares will be HK$6.5.
Star Ferry will also replace its elderly free rides with HK$2 concessionary fares. The price of monthly tickets will also increase from HK$160 to HK$190. The monthly ticket price will increase from HK$160 to HK$190.
The fare increase only partially follows the amount requested in the application.
Since last February, Star Ferry has requested to double the ticket fares for their two ferrying routes, with the single journey adult tickets for the upper deck increasing to HK$ 6.4 and reaching as high as HK$ 8.4 during the weekends and public holidays.
Star Ferry said it has been in the red since 2018, harshly hit by the 3-year-long pandemic and the growth of the rail network, suffering a deficit of HK$37 million in 2021 and only being able to stay afloat due to loans.
The Executive Council expects the Star Ferry to break even after the fare hike in one to two years.
