SOS signal by young Lion Rock hiker turns out to be false alarm
A rescue crew coming in a helicopter and several emergency services vehicles was deployed to Lion Rock early Wednesday morning, only to find that the SOS signal sent from a 21-year-old hiker to his mother was a false alarm.
The teen surnamed Yuen left his home and went for an overnight hike at Lion Rock with his classmates to see the sunrise on Wednesday morning. Yet, the mother woke up about 7am and found a SOS signal sent from Yuen's iPhone around 6am. She then immediately filed a police report.
A rescue crew was soon mobilized to Lion Rock to search for Yuen, as well as a helicopter from the Government Flying Service.
After a while, a friend of Yuen called his mother to tell her that they were all safe and sound, and the rescue crew also successfully contacted Yuen to confirm his safety.
It was understood that Yuen claimed his iPhone was “broken” and he failed to contact his mother at the time. Therefore, he used the built-in function of his iPhone and sent the SOS signal to his mother, triggering the rescue mission.
Yuen and his friends later left Lion Rock on their own and none was sent to hospital.
