Employers started booking the city's second quarantine hotel for their newly-arrived foreign domestic helpers in Tsing Yi yesterday.
Rambler Garden Hotel provides a total of 500 rooms specifically for foreign domestic helpers coming to work in Hong Kong but the chief executive officer of Overseas Employment Centre Cheung Kit-man said there is still an insufficient number of quarantine rooms.
Hong Kong now provides 1,909 units for foreign helpers to quarantine, including Penny's Bay Quarantine Centre in Lantau Island and a hotel - Silka Tsuen Wan in Kwai Chung.
Rambler Garden Hotel charges HK$650 for a room per night, which includes three meals and all charges. A 21-day quarantine, as mandated by the government, would amount to HK$13,650.
The room rate per night at Penny's Bay would cost HK$480 while the hotel in Kwai Chung costs HK$800 per night.
Rambler Garden started to accept bookings at 9.30am yesterday for rooms available from November 1 to January 10.
Cheung, who is also the chairman of the Hong Kong Employment Agencies Association, said his company was able to secure eight rooms for the next two months from Rambler Garden.
He expects that all rooms in Rambler Garden will be fully booked for the rest of this year.
One of the issues with hotel bookings is that there would be days that are unavailable for booking during the middle of the month, Cheung said.
This makes it difficult for employment agencies or employers who are trying to book for 21 consecutive days.
A man surnamed Lau faced the same problem when attempting to book a room from the hotel in Tsing Yi yesterday. He noticed that November 12 to 21 is unavailable for bookings.
Penny's Bay Quarantine Centre started another round of booking yesterday.
Cheung said his company had also attempted to book Penny's Bay Quarantine Centre yesterday but they were already fully booked within three minutes.
Cheung's company has to book quarantine rooms for more than 300 domestic helpers.
He noted that as of now, there still is an insufficient number of quarantine rooms for foreign domestic helpers and suggested that the government add another 1,000 rooms.
