Seaplane Hong Kong set to build plane powered by hydrogen fuel cell
Startup company Seaplane Hong Kong announced on Friday that it will build a plane powered by hydrogen fuel cell, which can travel from Tuen Mun to Central in only eight minutes.
Seaplane HK expected the plane can commence service in Hong Kong, Greater Bay Area and Malaysia starting 2024.
The plane, which is called eVTOL, will be designed, developed and manufactured in Hong Kong, said Steven Dominique Cheung, founder and chief executive of Seaplane HK.
However the startup company has yet to discuss details with relevant government departments. Neither have they filed any registration for licenses.
According to Seaplane HK, eVTOL, with eight seats on it, can rise or descend vertically. It will first be used for logistics and the plane will cover transportation if operation remains smooth.
Seaplane HK said the transportation service will mainly cover routes traveling between commercial area. It can travel from Tuen Mun to Central in just eight minutes.
The company also expected eVTOL can switch to autopilot if the operation runs smoothly and with legal permission, in order to reduce costs.
Cheung expected a flight ticket from Central to Tseung Kwan O will cost less than HK$300.
He added that they are now looking for land to build the plane factory and studying on transforming the rooftops of skyscrapers into landing platforms for the plane.
They have applied to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park and Innovation and Technology Bureau for research funding. They are also cooperating with overseas technology enterprises and raising funds.
