Sai Wan man plunges to his death attempting to retrieve fallen AirPods
A 26-year-old man allegedly fell to his death in Sai Wan in the early hours on Tuesday when climbing out of the window to pick up his wireless earphones.
The case was reported to police by pedestrians at 1.22am Tuesday after spotting the construction worker surnamed Fan, whose face was covered in blood, on Eastern Street.
He was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in a coma and was eventually pronounced dead. The actual cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
Police later cordoned off the scene to investigate and asked shops nearby for security camera footage.
After a preliminary investigation, officers suspected that Fan was playing games on his phone in his room when his AirPods accidentally fell out of the window and onto the canopy below. Fan then slipped and fell when climbing out to retrieve his AirPods.
It was understood that passers-by downstairs once thought Fan was about to commit suicide and told him to stop as they saw him climbing out of the window. Fan yelled back, “I am not jumping down!” before falling.
It was also understood that Fan had a wife, now in the mainland, as well as a child. He lived in a flat on the fifth floor of the building, with him occupying one room and his brother, sister-in-law, and nephew sharing another.
His family was sleeping at the time, and they only learned of the shocking news after they answered the door to the police.
Police found a phone in Fan’s room with the game still on the screen, along with the charging case for the AirPods. The pair of earphones was located on the street.
