Restaurants fill with citizens celebrating Father's Day despite Covid rebound

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic seeing a rebound, restaurants are filled with families celebrating Father's Day on Sunday.
A restaurant in Lok Fu reported full in the morning and noon as many citizens came for "yum cha".

Some said although the number of cases has risen recently, they would not worry too much about the pandemic and would live normal lives. A diner with his family of three generations said they all got vaccinated and were happy that the family could spend the holiday together.

The person in charge said that in addition to the morning tea time, lunch and dinner time were also booked out a week ago.

However, as authorities called on the public to avoid cross-family gatherings on Father's Day, some customers who had reserved tables for eight called to change the number of guests. He said it had an eight to ten percent decrease in the restaurant's overall business.

Simon Wong Ka-wo, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades, the booking rate for dinner on Sunday had reached some 80 to 90 percent, whereas the business may fall by 30 percent compared to last year as the economy was still weak.

He also said although the government has recently called on the public to reduce cross-family gatherings, restaurants have not seen any cancellations on bookings so far.

However, he added that as restaurants were still subject to a limit of eight people per table, some large families may choose to celebrate at home.
