Research on converting govt building into sports venue to be completed this year: Paul Chan
The financial chief said on Sunday that the government will accomplish the feasibility research on converting a government building into an urban sports venue this year, as well as hold a public consultation.
In a post on his blog today, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po said the government plans to renovate some underutilised floors of the Kwun Chung Municipal Services Building to provide a suitable venue for urban sports such as sport climbing and skateboarding.
In addition, Chan noted that the government would examine the conversion of King George V Memorial Park in Kowloon to build a centre for urban sports, including premises for indoor and outdoor activities.
He also posted four pictures showing him playing skateboards with several young people. He stressed that the government values the city's sports development and hopes to embrace more major international sports events.
Chan added that the government will improve the environment of sports grounds provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department - including updating the bouldering walls and skateboarding places - and benefits premises ranging from 14 indoor and outdoor sport climbing facilities, eight skateboard grounds, five skateparks, and more than 120 five-a-side soccer pitches.
"Hong Kong is awaiting a series of sports events lined up with the recovery after the pandemic, including Hong Kong Sevens, International Dragon Boat Races, Hong Kong Cyclothon and so on," he said, expecting a business profit on the city's tourism, catering and retailing sectors.
