A 30-year-old Hong Kong man who set off on a hike has been missing for four days, sparking a joint search operation in the Fanling countryside.

Police confirmed on Saturday evening that a report was made earlier this week, centred on Yip Wan-fuk, who is 1.7 metres (5ft 6in) tall, of thin build with short brown hair and sporting tattoos on his arms.

The father-of-two was last seen wearing a grey shirt, black pants and brown shoes, as well as carrying a black backpack.

Yip Wan-fuk was reported missing by his wife.

Emergency services, comprising police, the Fire Services Department and the Civil Aid Service have been searching for Yip in Pak Fu Shan since Friday.

The man’s wife, who reported him missing, said Yip left home at Fanling’s Cheung Wah Estate on Tuesday at about 9pm to go on a solo hiking and camping trip, but she had since lost contact with him.

The woman told local media that she and her family were worried sick, especially with cold weather arriving, adding that her husband might not have enough warm clothes.

Police urged witnesses to contact the force at any station, or call 3661 3128 or 6273 5787.

The mercury on Friday dipped to a low of 19 degrees Celsius at night, according to the Observatory. The weather will remain mostly cloudy, with one or two light showers expected on Sunday morning.

Red flags were raised at five public beaches on Saturday because of big waves, including Stanley Main, Silverstrand and Shek O. Visitors were advised not to swim.
