Relatives mourn after tower crane collapse, with probes launched into accident
The families of the victims killed in the fatal industrial accident in Sau Mau Ping, involving a tower crane collapsing which killed three and injured six, returned to the construction site on Thursday to pay respects to the deceased.
Nine workers inside cargo containers on the Anderson Hill Road site were hit when a tower crane collapsed shortly before 11am on Wednesday. Six were injured, one was declared dead at the scene, one victim was certified dead after being rushed to the hospital, and one remained trapped but was found dead when freed by firefighters.
The father and wife, along with other relatives of 41-year-old electrician Hui Man-ming - one of the three victims - came to the scene at 11am today, noting that no relevant departments or organizations had reached out to them so far.
Authorities claimed to negotiate with Hui’s family this afternoon regarding the pension, while the relatives said they would seek assistance from the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims since they were in financial difficulties as Hui was the breadwinner.
It is also learned that family members of the other two dead workers, 26-year-old engineer Tsui Hok-pui and 22-year-old assistant engineer Pun Ho-yuk, arrived at the site around 2pm today.
Two of the six injured workers who were sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital were still in severe condition, four others were discharged from the United Christian Hospital after medical care.
A pension of over HK$300,000 will be granted to the families of the dead, and HK$100,000 in financial assistance will be paid to the relatives of the injured workers, said the Hong Kong Housing Society on Wednesday.
The two visibly damaged and contorted containers were yesterday removed by firefighters with a rescuing crane and placed on the construction site, with green canvas covering them.
The containers, now with debris inside, had been used as a dining area and changing room, according to a worker named Lam.
Chris Sun Yuk-han, Secretary for Labor and Welfare, announced yesterday to have already launched an inspection on the cause of the accident and ceased the operations of the construction site, including three tower cranes, under order of the city’s leader John Lee Ka-chiu.
