Red rainstorm warning issued, Sha Tin gourmet marketplace temporarily suspended
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal on Sunday at 1.35 pm.
This means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 50 millimeters in an hour, and is likely to continue.
The Observatory warned heavy rain could cause serious road flooding and traffic congestion.
The weather watchdog said that people who have to travel should carefully consider the weather and road conditions and take necessary precautions.
Heavy rain will bring flash floods, and flooding is occurring or is expected to occur in watercourses.
Residents living near rivers should stay alert to weather conditions and should consider evacuation if their homes may become flooded.
Meanwhile, the "Happy Hong Kong" Gourmet Marketplace held in Sha Tin Park today has now been temporarily suspended. Members of the public are advised not to visit.
Depending on the weather condition, the Gourmet Marketplace may re-open where circumstances permit.
The Social Welfare Department announces that while the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal has been issued, centres providing after-school care programmes and elderly services centres, which normally operate on Sundays and public holidays, will remain open during their normal operating hours.
If necessary, public members can contact the centres to make arrangements for the safe return home of their children and family members.
