Red Cross to provide psychological counseling over Abby Choi case
The Red Cross said on Tuesday they have received pleas for help over the tragic case of Abby Choi Tin-fung and called on people to reach out for psychological counseling if needed.
Dr Eliza Cheung Yee-lai, a clinical psychologist and service in-charge of the Hong Kong Red Cross, said they have received pleas for help from villagers living in Lung Mei Tsuen - the place where police last Friday uncovered some of Choi’s body parts after she was allegedly murdered.
She said citizens, especially those who live near the site and those who followed the case closely, would develop unpleasant feelings and insomnia - which are normal responses to such abnormal situations.
Cheung recommended those who were troubled by the incident should reduce receiving relevant information, and should seek professional counseling should they remain stressed for over two weeks. Adults should also check on their children whether they were troubled by the case.
She also said they are now working on providing assistance to the villagers through the village representative.
If you feel distressed from the accident, you could call or WhatsApp 5164 5040 to the Hong Kong Red Cross’ Shall We Talk hotline. You could also call 18288 to Caritas’ 24-hour crisis hotline.
The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups also runs a youth crisis hotline at 2777 8899, which runs from 2pm to 2am Monday to Saturday, and a WhatsApp service at 6277 8899.
