Private car plunges into Fanling building during police chase
A red private car crashed through the windows of an industrial building in Fanling and caught fire during a chase with the police on Sunday.
The driver, 33, was arrested for five offenses including dangerous driving. With hand and leg injuries, he was sent to North District Hospital for treatment.
At around 2am Sunday, New Territories North traffic cop patrolled the streets with an unmarked vehicle during Operation Quickchaser to combat driving under the influence.
A suspicious vehicle was spotted at the intersection of Luen Hing Street and Wo Tai Street. Its driver defied instruction to stop on Fan Leng Lau Road and stepped on the gas pedal instead, starting a catch-me-if-you-can chase with the police.
At the intersection of Lok Yip Road and Yip Wo Street at Lok Tsuen industrial estate, the private car crashed into a roadside barrier. It was thrown into the air and smashed into an industrial building, shattering its windows.
The private car caught fire but its driver managed to escape.
The police vehicle also failed to stop in time. It crashed into an empty tour coach parked on the street and damaged fences on the roadside, only stopping when it hit a pillar.
The traffic policeman was not injured, and he managed to arrest the private car driver for dangerous driving, driving during license suspension and without third party insurance. The driver refused to perform a breathing test for drunk driving and a rapid oral fluid test against drug driving.
The driver of the tour coach arrived at the scene later.
