Police to "act soon" against June 4 vigil organizer
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung said the police will “act soon” after the organizers of the June 4 vigil refused to submit requested information to national security police.
The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China gave a formal reply at around 3pm to the police's national security department, which has accused them of being "foreign agents."
The group did not hand in the information police were seeking, such as its membership, operations, and finances. Four standing committee members of the alliance left the police headquarters in Wan Chai after a 30-minute stay.
Speaking to reporters in the afternoon, Tang said police would not rule out prosecution against the alliance in the future. Details on how the alliance is a “foreign agent” will be revealed in court if such prosecution goes ahead.
“Anyone who does not hand over information in accordance with the law, police will carry out follow-up legal action quickly, smoothly, and efficiently,” Tang added.
The alliance's vice-chairwoman, Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, said after the group submitted the letter, police had warned them they could face legal consequences for not handing over information, and standing committee members of the alliance are mentally prepared for it.
Police warned that members of the group could be jailed for six months and fined HK$100,000 if they fail to submit the information on time.
Chow said the alliance will not submit any information, as the group is not a "foreign agent," and said that the letter from the police requesting information is against the law.
A standing committee member of the alliance, Tsui Hon-kwong, applied for a judicial review at the High Court in his own name. He asked the court to rule that commissioner of police Raymond Siu Chak-yee’s decision to give them the letter for request of information is wrong.
“It does not sit well with me that I have been a committee member of the alliance for 31 years and I love the country, but they claim I am a foreign agent,” Tsui said before the alliance submitted their letter to the police.
He added the alliance is the “complete opposite” of a foreign agent. Instead of following the direction of foreign countries, “I follow the direction of those who have sacrificed their life in Tiananmen [Square protest],” Tsui said.
