Police arrested 27 over HK$10 million fraud cases, including a 15-year-old
Hong Kong police busted 20 fraud cases involving HK$10 million in a three-day operation, arresting 27 suspected fraudsters.
The 27 arrestees, aged between 15 and 55, included 18 men and nine women. Their occupations include students, logistics workers, waiters and construction site workers, some of which were unemployed.
Officers found the arrestees served different roles in fraud cases, such as contacting the victims or setting up fake bank accounts.
"The force received 22,309 fraud cases from January to October this year," said police inspector Yip Yan-wa of the Yau Tsim District.
"The figure is an increase of 43 percent compared to the same period last year,” Yip said.
"The fraudulent methods of the arrestees include providing false job offers, disguising themselves to be officers of the police or the Department of Health for asking money, and falsely claiming to offer services to exchange Renminbi," she added.
