Patient dies after walking away from the hospital

A patient died after leaving the hospital without notifying staffers at Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, the hospital announced tonight.
The incident has also been reported to the Hospital Authority Head office and has been referred to the Coroner.

The patient had a history of chronic illness and he was brought to the Accident and Emergency Department at around 5am on April 24. He presented with fever, vomiting and fall injury. He was accompanied by his family members on the way to hospital.

He was diagnosed with head injury and was arranged for a brain computed tomography and X-ray examination.

The patient was waiting for admission to medical ward after the examinations at around 6am at the patient waiting area. Staffers observed and arranged medication for the man at around 6.45am and the patient’s condition was stable. His relatives had left the AED earlier, the hospital added.

Staff discovered that the patient left the hospital without notifying them at around 7.15am. Security guards performed a full-scale search within the hospital and reported the incident to the man’s relatives and the police.

The police was then informed that the patient was in a shopping mall at Tai Po. Ambulance came and sent the patient back to hospital. Record showed that he was in serious condition with resuscitation performed in the ambulance on the way back to hospital.

The patient arrived in the AED at 8.25am. Staff immediately performed resuscitation for him and sent him to the medical ward for further management. However his condition deteriorated and he passed away at around 2.36am on April 25.

The hospital expressed condolences and said they will continue to closely communicate with the patient’s family to provide assistance.
