One step further for HK athletes in Tokyo Olympics
Eleven athletes will snatch the gold medals on Saturday, the first day of the Tokyo Olympics, and 16 Hong Kong athletes will compete in nine events.
A total of 46 Hong Kong athletes have qualified for 38 events at the Tokyo Olympics, covering 14 sports. Several familiar faces have shown up as of midday.
Badminton player Angus Ng Ka-long played against Lino Muñoz from Mexico and won 21:9 and 21:10 in the men's singles group play.
Fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai beat Maria Luisa Diog Calderon from Peru 15:11 and got into the round of 16 of women's épée individual.
Kong will face Renata Knapik-Miazga from Poland in the afternoon.
Table tennis players Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem proceeded to the quarterfinal after defeating Adam Szudi and Szandra Pergel in all four games.
The duo will face Emmanuel Lebesson and Yuan Jia Nan from France in the quarterfinal.
In the women's single sculls, Winne Hung Wing-yan clocked 8:23:58 in the repechage, only 6.28 seconds behinds Milena Venega Cancio from Cuba who came first in the group, and made it to the quarterfinal.
