A Frenchman died and another got injured after the sailboat they were on flipped over near Po Toi Island to the south-east of Hong Kong Island.
The sailboat of about 16 feet long was overturned by strong winds some 50 meters away from Beaufort Island at 1.49 pm today.
The two men on board fell into the sea. One was trapped underneath the sailboat.
Rescuers sent both to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
One died after resuscitation. Another was conscious when he was sent to hospital.
The Observatory issued a special weather warning this afternoon, saying strong winds were expected. The public was reminded to beware of rough seas.
Strong monsoon signal is now in force. Strong winds with mean speed exceeding 40 kilometers per hour are expected from the east. Gusts will occasionally reach gale force.
In the past hour ending 4.30pm, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Cheung Chau beach and Tap Mun were 74, 62 and 54 km per hour with maximum gusts 86, 78 and 62 km per hour respectively.
Under strong winds, a tree fell on Tsuen Wan-bound Lung Cheung Road at 5 pm, causing a lane to be cordoned off.
Trees also fell in Kowloon City and Prince Edward Road West this morning, as well as on Cheung Fai Road in Tsing Yi.
Scaffolding collapsed on Ching Tak Street in Wong Tai Sin at 10 am today.
The maximum speed limit for the link to Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong has been lowered from 100 km per hour to 50 km per hour due to strong wind.
