Off-duty cop accused of hitting a man in bus terminus break room released on bail
A 48-year-old off-duty cop accused of hitting a man in the break room at a Chai Wan bus terminus was on Thursday released on cash bail for HK$1,000.
The defendant Lau Hiu-cheung faces a count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, for he allegedly assaulted a man named Kwok in the break room at Siu Sai Wan (Island Resort) Public Transport Terminus on January 8.
The case was mentioned for the first time before Judge Daniel Tang Siu-hung in the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday.
Lau needed not to enter a plea yet in court today, and Judge Tang adjourned the case to June 1, awaiting the defense to retrieve relevant documents and to seek legal advice.
Lau was then released on cash bail for HK$1,000. He must not contact witnesses summoned by the prosecution and must not return to the crime scene.
It is understood that Lau is a police officer and has been suspended from duty.
