The Hong Kong Observatory has raised the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 at 10.40pm on Thursday, noting that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected. The Signal No. 3 will remain in force before Friday noon.
At 11 pm, Tropical Storm Chaba was estimated to be about 570 kilometres south of Hong Kong and is forecast to move north-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour in the general direction of the coast of western Guangdong.
According to the present forecast track, as Chaba edges gradually closer to the coast of western Guangdong, local winds are strong over offshore areas and on high ground.
The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force before Friday noon. The need to issue the No. 8 Gale or Storm Signal thereafter depends on the development of Chaba and the changes of the local winds. The Observatory will closely monitor the movement of Chaba.
The weather watchdog said seas are rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.
