Hong Kong Observatory said the city would see heavy showers and squally thunderstorms this week from Tuesday to Friday, and may issue rainstorm warning signals depending on the actual situation.
A trough of low pressure over the northern part of southern China will move southwards and edge close to the coast of Guangdong tomorrow. The weather over the region will become unsettled gradually.
The trough of low pressure is expected to linger over the coastal areas in the middle and latter parts of this week, bringing heavy showers and squally thunderstorms to the region. The Probability of Significant Rain would maintain "high" from Monday to Friday.
Acting Senior Scientific Officer Kok Mang-hin said the rainfall is quite random due to the low-pressure trough, while showers will gradually increase starting Monday.
He called on citizens to pay attention to weather forecasts before heading to work or school, as well as to allow more time for transportation and be aware of the weather impacts on outdoor activities.
The Observatory also explained in its Weather Notes that the duration of the unsettled weather depends on the location and development of the "Meiyu trough".
According to the latest computer model, the trough will hover along the Guangdong coast to the northern South China Sea from mid to late this week. If the trough stagnates along the coast, heavy rainfall in Hong Kong will continue for a longer period of time.
