New Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel ‘much thunder and little rain’, says lawmaker
“Much thunder and little rain” is what a lawmaker said on Wednesday when referring to the new Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel - a new tunnel expected to divert an estimated 30 to 40 percent of traffic from the 32-year-old Tseung Kwan O Tunnel.
The lawmaker’s comments came as the new tunnel is expected to open at 8am on December 11, with authorities saying some 36,000 vehicles a day would be diverted to the new infrastructure.
Speaking on a radio program this morning, lawmaker Stanley Li Sai-wing said authorities had only added new bus routes running through the new tunnel instead of diverting existing bus routes from the old one.
He questioned if the new tunnel could really alleviate the traffic burden of the old tunnel if the number of bus routes running through it remains the same.
Li also raised concerns that the new tunnel would bring more traffic to Cha Kwo Ling, which authorities should step up road improvement works in the area and crack down on illegal parking.
